TL;DR - Helped a Financial Investment startup get a lot of success with first round investment by educating them about UX and how UI works, and working with them to develop their first demo visual prototype. Cleaned up their brand collateral and worked with them to create a very simple, clean and very easy to follow UI and presentation kit.
Commandiv shared an incubator with Datavore and the CEO / Founder John Zettler and I got into a discussion one day about how best to plan onboarding processes and conduct user testing:

My opinion has always been that studying user behavior and creating as many iterations as possible is a great way to refine your thinking - each prototype gives you the ability to both present your ideas *and* test them, assuming that the scenario you have created for your prototype is a test: John thought of it as more of a "right first time" approach in terms of planning meticulously toward a definite product.

This created a great working partnership, as our assumptions were often at odds with each other and our complimentary sets of ideas about the audience meant this was a very successful job all in all.
John had already created personas and a full suite of UCD products to test his idea - it was simply a matter of advising him as to the most technically simple ways in which to think about both the appllication and what the user needs from it:

In this way, I was able to make John fully aware of first use and ongoing use scnearios, and recognise that the UI / UX has to grow with the user and give them a sense of where they are at in terms of long term progress
